A fantastic 1 bedroom retreat, very unusual and totally unique

An unusual and unique holiday let, Artists Retreat is designed to let the maximum light flood in and to make the guest feel they are living in the landscape without camping. Very clever design with everything you could wish for in this self-contained holiday let.

Artists Retreat is next to, but separate from the owners house, the owner and her husband, a well known artist, designed the Artists Retreat with a keen eye for design and function. Parking is in front on a drive next to a large paddock which contains some of the large scuplture work. This paddock is shared but can be used by the guests and is fenced off from the rest of the house.

Entering the Artists Retreat from the rear via a terrace the glass double doors open in to the main sitting/dining/kitchen area. With high ceilings and skylights in the roof and a large glass door overlooking the paddock at the other end of the room, it is light and bright. The kitchen is galley style down the right hand side of the room and has everything you could need. To the right is the opening to the main bedroom with a stunning glass wall looking out on woodland, and the walk in shower room with wc, wash hand basin is off the bedroom again with a full length feature window looking out on the paddock.

Garden birds love the feeders only a meter or so from the floor to ceiling feature window and you can be entranced by the antics of a huge range, including woodpeckers, finches and nuthatch. Contests between the squirrels and the birds are sometimes fascinating.

There are stone floors throughout. The woodburner provides heat for the Retreat and there are electric heaters as well. Quality duvets, pillows, bed linen and towels are provided. Artists Retreat is popular but ascetic; it is not like hotel accommodation. That is part of its special character; more can be seen in the feedback under 'General Information'. Please ring if you wish for more information. More can be found under the 'area' tab above.

A £50 security deposit will be requested by the homeowner prior to arrival, as surety against any damages, following an inspection after your departure, this will be refunded within one week, by cheque.

The owners, on request, can provide a Shropshire Supper on the first evening complete with a bottle of wine for £25.00. Please request this directly with the owners, several days in advance, to ensure ingredients can be purchased and arranged.

One well behaved dog is welcome (more might be acceptable by arrangement), if you are staying with your dog there are a few basic rules; do not leave your dog unattended either in the let or the garden, please clean up any mess your dog makes either in the garden or woodland, please do not allow dogs on the furniture. Dogs are charged at £15.00 per pet per week or part thereof. About Pet Friendly When choosing dates, please select the duration of your stay on the drop down menu above the calendar, then float and click the pointer over the desired starting date. Public footpaths lead from nearby the Retreat up to Clee Hill which has stunning views over South Shropshire and North Herefordshire, perfect for walkers or cyclists.

Smaller places, such as Dymock and Kempley are well worth a visit as well as Ledbury, Gloucester and Worcester. Also worth visiting are The Forest of Dean, The Malverns and The Brecon National Park

This is the idyllic country retreat, there is plenty to see and do. Visit our Events Calendar, Attractions, Things to do for free and Where to Eat pages for more ideas.

The farm track leading up to Artists Retreat is not surfaced therefore it is a bit bumpy, take care when driving and take it slowly.

May 2017 Our booking was very straightforward and we received acknowledgement and directions promptly. The sixty photos of the Artists Retreat had given us a good idea of what to expect, but the reality was even better.

We'd looked at so many pictures of holiday lets which were either modern and fussy with hearts and fairy lights or furnished with junk shop furniture in lurid colours. The Artists Retreat offered something different: an aesthetic of classic simplicity. We loved the situation, the furnishings, and the shower. The kitchen equipment was of good quality and adequate for our needs. We appreciated the top sheet on the bed: so often we've been faced with duvets which are too warm with no alternative. The picture window from the bedroom was amazing. The glow from the log burner, the bottle of wine and the electric blanket were all part of the warm welcome we received from Mrs Cox and we appreciated her checking during the week that all was well. Most of all, we enjoyed sitting on the patio at the lovely table listening to the bees, birds and sheep and soaking up the peace. We went on holiday looking for a time of rest and restoration and found it here in generous measure.

Don't change a thing!

May 2017 "I get the feeling that the main aim here is one's comfort and enjoyment. Wonderful welcome, no "rules" and even the animals settled in and made themselves at home immediately. The owners were so patient and kind to my old, blind, deaf dog who thought he was entitled to go walk about and needed a bit of guidance to get back to the cottage.

This cottage is the perfect place if you want to totally chill - and that is exactly what we did. We did venture out to Ludlow and the Live and Let Live at Neen Sollars (great pub) but other than that we were just too comfortable to leave. Although it was not our first visit we will be back again and again. THANK YOU!"

March 2017 "We had a really lovely week at the Artists Retreat and would throughly recommend if you want a peaceful isolated holiday, bliss! Not far from interesting towns though and good walking area. Being able to order a supper delivered to your door on the first night by the owner is such a brilliant idea and very good value for money. Lovely start to the holiday. Our dog throughly enjoyed the safe secure garden space and the walks from the door. Only wish we could have stayed another week! Owners are such a lovely interesting couple. Very helpful but not intrusive. Thank you so much."

February 2017 "I just wanted to let you know how wonderful our holiday was at Artists Retreat – we had such a great time. Judy was an amazing host and had the wood burner going when we arrived a bottle of red wine warming nicely and the surprise of an electric blanket on when I went to bed. Their daughter’s Golder Retriever was staying with them and she played with our dog the whole time – it was such fun to watch! And, our dog had never come across so much mud! Some days they ran around for 3hrs at a time – it was wonderful. Thanks Charles, it was a great place to be for total escapism from London! Beautiful!"

November 2016 "We very much enjoyed our stay at the Artists Retreat.

The property was as described and the owner very courteous and helpful. There was a problem with the hot water but that was dealt with as quickly as possible given the circumstances and with due consideration. It did not affect our holiday. We love that part of Shropshire and would unhesitatingly recommend the property to people in search of peace and quiet in beautiful surroundings.

The location and wildlife is just magnificent."

August 2016 "Just wanted to let you know what a wonderful time we had at the Artist’s Retreat. Judy and Stephen were wonderful hosts and the property itself is amazing. My wife absolutely fell in love with the floor to ceiling picture window looking from the bedroom into the woods.

It was so calming to see all the birds come to the feeders hanging from the tree (and our dog loved it too!). The tranquility of the area is great, and we were fortunate enough to talk to Stephen about his artwork and thinking process. It’s rare to get the luxury of chatting with one of the UK’s most significant sculptors! We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and will be coming back again as soon as we can! Many thanks for a great break."

April 2016 "My wife and I spent three days at Artist's Retreat near Cleobury Mortimer. It was the perfect place on many accounts.

The owner made us feel very welcome. the building has been converted from a blacksmith's forge. Modernisation has ensured comfortable living with a well-equipped kitchen, expansive suite and wood burning stove. However, the most important feature was the floor to ceiling window in the bedroom.

Garden birds love the feeders and we were entranced by the antics of a huge range, including woodpeckers, finches and nuthatch. The battles between the squirrels and the birds was fascinating. Such was the spectacle, that it provided every excuse for a lazy lie in! The narrow roads leading to the property offer a great degree of privacy.

Shropshire is the most beautiful county and a short drive from the property allowed stunning views across three counties and a range of hills. With Ludlow close by, there are many places to visit and an excellent range of restaurants and pubs........ We will be returning"

September 2015 "If you want a quiet relaxing holiday, away from it all - absolutely lovely. Wildlife right outside the bedroom window was wonderful. But if you wanted to be out and about there were lovely places to visit a short distance away.

Artist's Retreat was ideal as a dog friendly place to stay and the owners were very accommodating people and helpful. Would not hesitate to return in the future."

August 2015 "........the shower was excellent and the sofa and the bed were both very comfortable. The location is superb and, although the property is next to the owners' house, the property affords a great deal of privacy.

Judy was very welcoming and even said we could go into her garden to watch badgers in the evening. We would have loved to have done that, but thought that it would be a bit of an imposition to stroll into her garden at dusk! We very much enjoyed our stay at Artist's Retreat and would recommend it to anyone who is looking to stay in the countryside with easy access to all that Shropshire has to offer."

March 2015 "Artists Retreat is the perfect hideaway. If you did all your food shopping before you arrived there really wouldn’t be any need to leave except perhaps to take a walk in the stunning Shropshire countryside. The setting is truly stunning and so peaceful.

The bedroom has a large window which looks out on to beautiful woodland with an abundance of beautiful birds feeding from the seeds that the owners thoughtfully put out in feeders hanging from the trees. The house is well designed with a fantastic shower, wood burner and a well equipped kitchen. It’s ideal if you have a dog as the stone floors save worrying about muddy paws. To complete this wonderful holiday rental the owners are lovely people and most helpful.

I’ve stayed in a lot of holiday lets and Artists Retreat is most definitely in my top 10. A final note - Country Holiday Lets were very helpful and polite when I made my enquiry, a real pleasure to deal with."

January 2015 "Artist's Retreat is the perfect spot to unwind! We were pleasantly welcomed by our hostess Judy Cox who showed us everything we needed to know to be comfortable during our stay. There was a complimentary bottle of extremely good quality spanish wine & a roaring log fire in the burner to greet us.

The king size double bed is extremely comfortable & the view out of the window of the birds, squirrels & pheasants activities around the feeder was a delightful show to wake up to. The shower is hot & powerful, which for us is always an important feature Her husband is an internationally renowned stone sculptor & consequently the whole garden is a filled with beautiful examples of his work. We had a very pleasant stay."

December 2014 "Just wanted to say how much we enjoyed The Artist's Retreat. Judy and Stephen are lovely and welcoming, and it was such a treat to see Stephen's work. The area is spot-on; close to pretty towns and stunning scenery, but also very peaceful and remote, which suited us perfectly. The Retreat itself is gorgeous; simple, comfortable and cosy. We loved watching the wildlife from the bed! Hopefully we'll see it in summer one day."

October 2014 "had a fantastic time at Artist retreat .Calm relaxing and so very peaceful. The log burner gave the cottage a warm and cosy feel all day. Loads of places to eat within a short drive . The birds and wildlife in the garden were fantastic when looked at from the huge window in the bedroom I did not want to move from the bed. Thank you so much."

Sept 2014 "We had a lovely time at the Artist's Retreat - a very warm welcome on arrival with a very nice touch of a jug of milk, bottle of wine and bracket of homegrown fruit. The owners were very friendly and helpful eg places to see or to eat out. The Retreat is lovely and peaceful in very pretty surroundings, ideal for us and our two small dogs. We hope to go back again quite soon!"

Sept 2014 "What an amazing place, we were greeted by Judy who was so lovely and helpful, she left us with a jug of milk and a bottle of wine and so our week began.Later we met Stephen and he showed us some of his work, leaving my husband so emotional at the sheer beauty and talent of it all, we felt so lucky. It really is a peaceful place and our Jack Russell loved it too. The only downside is the approach track which is really rough on tyre's and suspension but the price is worth paying!"

Aug 2014 "My week at the Artist's Retreat from 1 - 8 Aug. was delightful. It is a beautiful place and the owners were most welcoming"

June 2014 "Cameron read 9 books all provided. Alex gazed out of the window and dreamed of her own forge/barn conversion in Ireland. Sasunnach the spaniel chased squirrels 90 times, pheasants 3 times, bunnies 7 and got licked by a cow. Result....A perfectly wonderful holiday! Thank you so much for your wonderful hospitality and inviting us into your very interesting lives.. with gratitude..."

June 2014 "...thank you for sharing your corner of Shropshire - loved it. Our first time in this county. What a treat to wake up to see sheep and wild birds and this week four baby squirrels. Not to mention the 'al fresco' dining. Thank you"

May 2014 "We had a marvelous time. An idyllic location - just delightful to wake up to look straight out into the woods, to see squirrels and birds. Even a wild peacock!"

April 2014 "Thank you for the opportunity to see your wonderful sculptures. They are absolutely fascinating. We have had a lovely weekend."

April 2014 "We had a fabulous time at the Artist's Retreat. We were initially drawn by a high degree of flexibility as to arrival and departure days, and the stylish look of the place, We were not disappointed. While some elements of the property await some additional "finish", it did indeed provide very stylish and comfortable accommodation, and a wonderfully relaxing environment to retreat to. Waking up with floor-to-ceiling glass walls, providing a view straight out to trees, birds, squirrels etc was fantastic. And the reference, in the online property guide, to there being some of the owner's sculpture in the gardens is definitely a case of reserved under-statement! The owners could not have been more friendly or accommodating and we have every expectation that we'll make another visit one day..."
